CBS is known as the salt-and-pepper network, and this month it will live up
to its name. George Clooney persuaded the network to broadcast "Fail Safe" a
live remake of the 1964 Sidney Lumet thriller about a cold-war bomber
accidentally ordered to attack Moscow in black and white. "There's been
nothing like it on TV for the last 40 years," says programming analyst Marc
Berman, and that may be the problem. Despite big names like Noah Wyle, Don
Cheadle, Harvey Keitel and Richard Dreyfuss, CBS has scheduled the program
for April 9 instead of holding it for sweeps. "With that roster, you have to
assume people are going to watch, and if CBS really had faith in it they
would have put it in May," says Berman. "I'm sure it will be a well-done
project, but if it's not on Nick at Night, live in black and white just
doesn't wash with viewers." Guess the term "fail safe" doesn't apply to
ratings

Robin Williams, Richard Dreyfuss and Charles Durning are among the 75 actors
who will star in ``Beyond 2000,'' a 26-episode public radio drama drawn from
novels that pictured life beyond the year 2000.
Each hourlong episode will be based on works of such well-known authors as
Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Ray Bradbury, Mark Twain and Jack
London.
The abolishment of menstruation, the breakdown of a giant computer that
controls civilization, and a group of intelligent forest animals that sends
an expedition to the ruins of the extinct human race are among the comic and
tragic post-millennium events that the authors had envisioned.
Harlan Ellison will host the series. National Public Radio is co-producing
``Beyond 2000'' with Yuri Rasovsky's Hollywood Theater of the Ear. The
National Endowment for the Arts is funding the project.

About The Movie
It is the Cold War. Tensions between the U.S. and Russia are at an all-time high. A U.S. bomber is accidentally ordered to drop a nuclear warhead on Moscow.
Colonel Jack Grady (George Clooney) pilots the bomber into Russian territory, refusing to yield to verbal commands to turn back because he has passed the "fail safe" point the point of no return.
The U.S. President (Richard Dreyfuss) and his young interpreter Buck (Noah Wyle) work with Russian leaders in a gripping phone exchange to stop Grady's bomber.
This high-tension drama follows American military experts and heads of state as they tentatively team with their Russian counterparts and plunge into a crisis of split-second decision making in order to avert disaster.
Will the bomber reach Moscow?
Will nuclear Armageddon be unleashed?
About The Broadcast
Harkening back to the Golden Era of live TV, Fail Safe will be performed live from the Warner Bros. studio lot in Burbank, California on Sunday, April 9. All the actors went through several weeks of rehearsals for the event. There are no opportunities for re-takes in this exciting, dramatic approach to Fail Safe. Fail Safe will be the first live broadcast of a dramatic movie since Playhouse 90, which was broadcast from 1956-1960.

Clooney woos Dreyfuss for TV remake
George Clooney's live TV drama "Fail-Safe" is about to become a Dreyfuss affair.
Clooney's productionn company is negotiating with Dreyfuss to play the commander-in-chief in a live-to-air re-creation of the classic TV drama "Fail-Safe". It is scheduled to air on CBS in April, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
The original, which recounted, in real time, a nuclear near-miss, was directed by Sidney Lumet and aired in 1964. Henry Fonda took on the role that Dreyfuss is now eyeing.
Stephen Frears, who helmed "Dangerous Liasons" and "The Grifters," is to direct; the cast already includes Brian Dennehy and Clooney's "ER" pal, Noah Wyle.
The Hollywood Reporter said CBS wants to broadcast the show after the Masters golf tournament, April 9.

Tourette Syndrome Awards Dinner 2000 to Honor John Lithgow, Susan Conners;
Celebrity-studded Event Scheduled for February 10
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tourette Syndrome Association (TSA)
has announced that the organization will honor actor, John Lithgow, and TSA
leader, Susan Conners, at its 3rd annual TSA Awards Dinner scheduled for
February 10, 2000, at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. The event, which is
being co-chaired by event originators, Jeffrey Kramer and Vikki Holm-Kramer,
along with Ken and Julie Moelis, is the major West Coast fund raising
activity for the organization, which is dedicated to helping those affected
by the neurobiological disorder, as well as to those professionals involved
in its treatment. The master of ceremonies for the dinner will be 1998
honoree, Richard Dreyfuss.
``Vikki and I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the
entertainment community since we began chairing this event three years
ago,'' says Jeffrey Kramer, CEO of E-Media Entertainment. ``This year, we've
invited Ken and Julie Moelis to join us as co-chairs and they've done a
great job getting the business and financial community involved. To date,
the TSA Awards Dinner 2000 has received commitments exceeding two million
dollars.''
``It is inspiring to see this kind of response at such a critical time in
the battle against Tourette,'' adds Ken Moelis, Managing Director of the
investment banking firm, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. ``With recent
breakthroughs in genetic research, we're closer than ever to finding a cure.
Now, our community is waking up to this cause and, through this event, is
demonstrating its faith and commitment to helping achieve that goal.''
TSA Awards Dinner 2000 honorees merit their selection. A multi-talented,
award-winning actor, John Lithgow is the star of the NBC hit comedy series,
``3rd Rock from the Sun.'' His career in film, television and theater has
spanned over 20 years, and his credits include such notable films as ``Blow
Out,'' ``A Civil Action,'' ``Homegrown,'' ``Terms of Endearment,'' ``Amazing
Stories,'' ``M Butterfly,'' ``The Pelican Brief,'' and ``The World According
to Garp,'' to name a few. In addition, Lithgow is a popular children's
entertainer, performing his original songs for kids live in concert, on
television, and on an album, ``Singin' in the Bathtub,'' and music video.
Serving as President of the Western New York Chapter of TSA for the past 16
years, Susan Conners is an outstanding spokesperson for TSA. Personally
afflicted with the disorder, Conners' five siblings and mother also have
Tourette. She has made presentations to more than 200 schools, and has
earned a national reputation as an educational advocate for children with
TS. She has spoken at every National TSA Conference since 1991, as well as
at local conferences throughout the country. Her national and international
recognition has led to many awards, plus appearances on radio and
television, and she continues to be a staunch advocate for Tourette,
educating and informing the public about the disorder.
Tourette Syndrome is an inherited neurobiological disorder that affects
children and adults of both genders and of all racial and ethnic groups. For
25 years, the Tourette Syndrome Association has provided the highest level
of education, research and service to all individuals and their families
affected by this life-tormenting disorder, and to the professionals who
treat them. Now in its third year, the TSA Annual Awards Dinner helps to
bring greater public awareness and generate financial support to fight the
disorder. The first two events raised over $2MM in financial support. Past
honorees include Dr. Oliver Sacks, Richard Dreyfuss, Maury Povich and Cuba
Gooding, Jr. (who received his 1999 award from Robin Williams).
``What sets this event apart is that it serves as a wonderful learning
tool,'' adds Vikki Holm-Kramer. ``Through these dinners and the
participation of our honorees, we've been able to raise public awareness and
help remove some of the stigma associated with Tourette, which can be worse
than the disorder, itself.''
The TSA Awards Dinner 2000 kicks off with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed
by dinner at 7:30 p.m. For tickets to the dinner, plus information on making
contributions, contact Tarin Wilson at Kidd & Company (310) 559-9334.

November 18, 1999 HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - It's a jungle out there. I'm not talking about Hollywood, I'm talking about the real jungle -- in French Guiana. "It's where insects are the size of tennis shoes, they are so large they are on the crew and help move cables. Anteaters come in sizes large, X-large and XX-large. The 'takes' are interrupted by someone yelling 'kill it' when the scorpions get too close, where parasites have an entirely new meaning, the temperature ranges from 110 -- and up -- and it gets so humid I have to change my makeup 15 times a day!" That's Richard Dreyfuss talking from the location of "The Old Man Who Read Stories." The company films 90 minutes outside of Cayenne, French Guiana. He costars with Cathy Tyson in the Rolf de Heer-directed Pandora indie produced by Michelle de Boca. Dreyfuss alerts us with, "You won't recognize me" -- as he plays the "old man." Why did he leave the comfy confines of Beverly Hills for this pic -- in which he doesn't even have a percentage? "This film is so tender. It's a beautiful script -- about an old man and a prostitute who live in this God-forsaken place where I have to go up the river to kill a jaguar with a blowgun. And I work with a real jaguar! He's wise and has his head on his shoulders -- not like me! And I really aspire to this character." Playing different roles is Dreyfuss' delight -- from his Oscar-winning performance in "The Goodbye Girl" to "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," his nominated "Mr. Holland's Opus." And his upcoming "The Crew" with fellow veteran thesp Burt Reynolds in which they play (former) old-time gangsters. They shot that one in the comforts of Miami! Dreyfuss will recuperate from this current experience by vacationing at Christmas with his children -- in Paris.

July 15, 1999 Jennifer Tilly (Bride of Chucky) has joined the cast of Disney’s dark comedy The Crew, about retired Mafioso. Tilly will play the part of a stripper who tries to hire the old gangsters to put a hit on her stepmother. The film will star Burt Reynolds, Richard Dreyfuss, Carrie Anne Moss, Seymour Cassel, Dan Hedaya and Jeremy Piven.
Published Thursday, July 29, 1999, in the Miami Herald Hollywood meets Hollywood -- Florida, that is -- when Burt Reynolds and Richard Dreyfuss film on location Friday at Hollywood beach. Scenes from Touchstone Pictures' The Crew will be shot at 2740 N. Surf Rd. beginning at 5 a.m. Friday's shoot will involve scenes with Jennifer Tilly, who most recently starred in Bride of Chucky, and Jeremy Piven, who played Spence on the sitcom Ellen.
HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - ``The Matrix'' co-star Carrie-Anne Moss is in negotiations to take the female lead opposite Richard Dreyfuss and Burt Reynolds in the motion picture comedy ``The Crew.'' The film is about a group of retired goodfellas in Miami who try to stave off an onrush of yuppies in their neighborhood. But their plan to use a murdered man's body to scare off the competition backfires when their corpse's son, a local drug lord, mistakenly targets them. In the film, Moss would play a police detective investigating the crime and who uncovers some interesting connections. Michael Dinner is set to direct the comedy from a script by Barry Fanaro. ``The Crew,'' which is budgeted at $25 million, is slated to go before the cameras July 9 in Miami.Dreyfuss has a busy year ahead, following ``The Crew,'' he heads to Venezuela for ``The Man Who Read Love Stories'' -- a Hemingway-esque story set in the jungle of Venezuela. It's followed by a young girl-older man romantic pic in Rome. He's equally enthused about the two roles -- and settings.
